Abstract
This dissertation understands the major flow of melodies analyzing skeletal melodies of the four haegeum sanjo schools: Han Beomsu, Ji Yeonghui, Seo Yongseok, and Kim Youngjae schools. It examines patterns and functions of identical or similar skeletal melodies of each school. Its ultimate goal is to comprehensively reveal the characteristics of each school through skeletal melody patterns by comparing the development of skeletal melodies by section of the four schools based on those of naedeureum, an introducing melody of a section.
First, the patterns and functions of identical or similar skeletal melodies for each school are analyzed in three respects—dealing with them within the same section, in different sections, or in different tonal modes. Within the same section, in the case of Han Beomsu, Seo Yongseok, and Kim Youngjae schools, the skeletal melodies of gi (introducing) and naegi (another expression for 'gi') tend to have different functions in jinyangjo and jungmori movements, and after jungjungmori movement, the skeletal melodies of 'dalgi' (developing) have the same function or is used as the function of 'maetgi' (climaxing). On the other hand, in the case of Ji Yeonghui school, most of the skeletal melodies of naegi have the function of 'dalgi' or 'maetgi'. The cases that one identical or similar skeletal melody is seen in different sections appear in most movements; exceptionally, there is no such melody in jajinmori movement in Han Beomsu and Ji Yeonghui schools while none in jinyangjo movement in Seo Yongseok and Kim Youngjae schools. In these cases, skeletal melodies show different patterns for each movement: they play the same function in each section in the movements of jinyangjo, jungmori, and jajinmori whereas they play a different function in jungjungmori movement from Ji Yeonghui, Seo Yongseok, and Kim Youngjae schools except for Han Beomsu school. When multiple identical or similar skeletal melodies are seen in different sections, they are categorized into three types: the 'sequential type', which appears in sequence, the 'changeable type', which changes the order, and the 'combined type', where multiple skeletal melodies from multiple paragraphs are combined to appear in one section. The sequential type appears in all schools, the changeable type only in Han Beomsu and Ji Yeonghui schools, and the combined type only in Seo Yongseok and Kim Youngjae schools. In different tonal modes, only the 'identical skeletal melodies' appear. In Han Beomsu and Kim Youngjae schools, the identical skeletal melodies appearing in ujo melodic mode appear in gyemyeonjo mode; in Ji Yeonghui school, those appearing in Gyeonggi sinawi mode appear in gyemyeonjo mode; in Seo Yongseok school, those shown in pyeongjo mode appear in gyemyeonjo mode and those shown in gyemyeonjo mode appear in deureongjo mode. This is especially noticeable when center tone is the same.

Next, the 'naedeureum skeletal melodies' are divided into low, mid, and high ranges, and sections showing identical, similar, or different naedeureum skeletal melodies for each range are analyzed. In the low-pitched range, identical, similar and different naedeureum skeletal melodies are all seen. Most of them perform parallel or ascending progression in all the schools, but in the case of the Han Beomsu school, descending progression is also observed. In the mid-range range, identical and different naedeureum skeletal melodies appear, and most of them show parallel and descending progression. In the high-pitched range, only the 'identical naedeureum skeletal melodies with a 'parallel' progression are shown. In sections showing the identical skeletal melodies, the progression in the middle of the section is different for each school and thus each school has its own unique progression. In addition, each school has a different progression in the cadence; especially in the low range, the Kim Youngjae school shows a different progression from other schools. Sections showing 'similar naedeureum skeletal melodies' show different directions of progression depending on the school. Sections showing 'different naedeureum skeletal melodies mostly show different progressions of 'naedeureum skeletal melodies' according to the school while it rarely shows progression in the same direction. In such case, generally, each school shows different progressions in the middle of the section and the same progression at the cadence. However, in case of appearing across several sections in one school, the progression direction is different for each section, showing various progressions.

Among the four schools of haegeum sanjo, the progression of skeletal melodies in the Han Beomsu and Ji Yeonghui schools are similar, and similar types appear in the Seo Yongseok and Kim Youngjae school, which shows that a similar pattern has appeared according to the formation period of the sanjo. In addition, in the development of the skeletal melodies of a section, even if the naedeureum skeletal melodies are the same, each develops its own melodic progression in the middle and at the end of the section, which reveals the individuality of each school.
