- Abstract
- Stress, as a disruption of homeostasis, induces diverse behaviors and autonomic responses, but the underlying neural circuit mechanism remains unclear. Here I provide evidence that neurons in the dorsal lateral septum (LSd) that express the somatostatin gene (hereafter, LSdSst neurons) respond to the stressor, and are involved in reducing heart rate of stressed mice. I performed in vivo fiber photometry recording from LSdSst neurons and revealed that this neural population is activated by stressor. Chemogenetic inhibition of LSdSst neurons decreases the heart rate of stressed mice. Optogenetic stimulation of LSdSst neurons, however, did not affect both stress-related behaviors and autonomic responses. Together, these results imply that under stressful circumstances, LSdSst neurons are activated and play a role in cardiac activity.
