Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate students' understanding of the relativity of simultaneity, to analyze their difficulties related to the theory of relativity, and to give some implications for effective teaching of the concept. In this study, 74 undergraduate students (41 physics majors and 33 non-physics majors) were asked to complete a questionnaire with seven different situations, which consisted of 15 questions. The results showed that students preferred situations with a stationary observer and were confused about measurements of the recognition of simultaneity. Physics majors performed significantly higher than non-physics majors. However, physics major had difficulties in comparing one single phenomenon with different frames of reference. This study suggests some implications for teaching the relativity of simultaneity by using a spacetime diagram.
