스토아학파의 타인에 대한 윤리 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 스토아학파의 윤리학을 타인에 대한 윤리 관점에서 조명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 스토아학파의 윤리학은 주로 내면 적 삶과 관련하여 이해되거나 세계시민사회를 주장한 것으로 이해 된다. 여기에는 우리가 일상생활 속에서 마주하며 살아가는 구체 적인 타인에 대한 설명이 잘 드러나지 않는다. 타인에 대한 윤리 를 설명하지 않는다면 스토아학파의 이론은 내면적 삶에 집중하여 자기중심적인 이론으로 여겨지거나 혹은 세계시민사회에 집중하여 개인성을 부정하는 이론으로 여겨지기 쉽다. 필자는 스토아학파를 타인에 대한 윤리의 관점에서 조명함으로써 어떠한 이유로 타인에 대해 도덕적 판단을 내릴 수 있으며 어떠한 이유로 도덕적 행위를 해야 하는지 탐구하고자 한다. 나아가 타인에 대한 윤리와 관련해 제기될 수 있는 쟁점들을 통해 타인은 자신의 행복과 어떠한 관련 을 맺는지, 무정념의 상태에 도달한 유덕자가 타인에 대해 어떠한 감정을 가질 수 있는지 등을 탐구하고자 한다. 스토아학파의 타인 에 대한 윤리는 교육과정과 교과서에 대한 도덕교육적 함의를 가 질 수 있다. 먼저 교육과정 차원에서 에피쿠로스와 스토아학파를 대립적으로 나누는 기존의 구도(쾌락 대 금욕)를 타인에 대한 윤 리와 관련해 수정한다면 헬레니즘 철학에 대한 왜곡이나 오해 없 는 구도 설정이 가능하다. 다음으로 교과서 차원에서 타인에 대한 윤리에 대한 내용을 추가 및 활용한다면 스토아학파에 대해 일관 된게 서술할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 삶과의 연계성을 향상시킬 수 있다.

This study aims to shed light on Stoic ethics from the perspective of ethics towards others. Stoic ethics is often understood in relation to the inner life or as an argument for a global citizenship. This does not include a description of the concrete others we encounter in our daily lives. Without an account of the ethics of others, Stoic theories are often seen as self-centered, focusing on the inner life, or as depersonalizing, focusing on global citizenship. By examining the Stoics from the perspective of ethics toward others, I will explore why we can make moral judgments about others and why we should perform moral acts. Furthermore, through the issues that can be raised in the ethics of others, I will explore how others relate to one's own happiness and how a virtuous person who has reached a state of apatheia can have feelings for others. The Stoics' ethics of others can have moral education implications for curriculum and textbooks. First, at the curriculum level, the existing division between Epicurus and the Stoics (pleasure versus stoicism) can be revised based on the ethics of others to avoid distorting or misrepresenting Hellenistic philosophy. Next, at the textbook level, adding and utilizing content on the ethics of others will not only provide a consistent description of the Stoics, but also improve their relevance to life.
