Abstract

This is a brief history of the syntactic, semantic and phonological studies conducted at Seoul National University since its foundation for the past 40 years. It is based on the titles/themes of the articles and dissertations written by SNU affiliates. The most remarkable phenomenon is the accomodation of the generative grammarian approach to syntax, semantics and pragmatics since early in the 1970s, although there were some traditional grammarian or structuralist studies even far before that. In the case of phonology, the studies that started in the 40s were significant and the generative phonological framework began to give an impact on the persuit of explicitness since the latter half of the 1970s. Both theoretical and descriptive studies have been lively since the inception of generative grammar, and Korean has been the focus of investigation by SNU (generative) linguists.
