dc.description.abstract | The Joseon dynasty was a country which prioritized values such as just causes
and moral obligations above anything else, and that can be seen from the dynastys accepting of Neo-Confucianism as the central ideology of the country. But during the early days of the dynasty, several issues that had clashed with such position of the government had occurred, and became a controversy. One of the earliest incidents that occurred at the time, and involved the Royal family members, was the incident in which Queen Shindeok Wanghu, the second wife(繼妃) of the Founder King Taejo, was denied the honor of being enshrined in the National shrine with her husband, and instead stripped of her rank and condemned(廢陵). This stripping and condemnation was an ongoing process which continued during the reigns of Kings Taejong and Saejong. Then later, during the reign of King Seonjo, when Sarim/士林 politics were finally established and entered a stabilized phase, the agenda of reinstating the late Queen Shindeok Wanghu and enshrining her in the National shrine was first suggested after a very long time. Yet the suggestion was rejected and postponed for a review for an indefinite time being, even though the agenda was supported by many people at the time. After the dynasty suffered two catastrophic warfares, restoring the ruling structure of the dynasty became the most critical priority of the Joseon dynasty, and in order to support such cause, concepts like just deeds and moral obligations were promoted as the most important and honorable values of all time. At the same time the prospect of successfully launching a campaign against the Northern Qing dynasty was significantly diminishing, and therefore the public support of the idea that the Joseon should remain loyal to the late Chinese Ming dynasty and serve as a guardian of those spirits naturally increased. This kind of atmosphere led to a series of discussions over issues such as establishing and demonstrating the governments position and ideas of the Legitimacy cause through governmental features such as the National Shrine, and the age-old issue regarding the enshrinement of the late Queen Shindeok Wanghu finally resurfaced. The discussion was triggered essentially when Song Shi Yeol/宋時烈 suggested to reopen this case for further discussion in 1669(10th year of King Hyeongjongs reign), and the talks were led by the Seoin/西人 politicians and scholars inside the government. The discussion later came to include other governmental officials and also the students at the Taehak institute, and resulted in the eventual enshrinement of Queen Shindeok Wanghu in the National Shrine. This was indeed a monumental case, considering how this case affected the discussions of the Legitimacy issues regarding the National Shrine that continued later on. | - |
