This thesis examined the construction of Han sul ya's novels. Han sul ya frequently took advantage of structure of apprenticeship in the construction of his novels, which might be characterized as roman it these, trying to convince a certain ideology. The positive exemplary apprenticeship is found In his preliberation novels such as Ordinariness, A wrong longing, Be/ore and after, Dusk. All of these works syntagmatically satisfied the requisites of positive exemplary apprenticeship, transformation from ignorance to knowledge and transformation from passivity to action. However, only A wrong longing and Dusk embodied every actor of positive exemplary apprenticeship paradigmatically among his novels. The trace of negative exemplary apprenticeship is discovered in his pre-liberation novels such as Stepping backward and A cross line, but which are deficient in essentials of negative exemplary apprenticeship. Han sul ya' s undoubted faith in his idealogy was so incompatible with the negative exemplary apprenticeship that he could not play well the negative exemplary apprenticeship throughout his works. Only the positive exemplary apprenticeship could be found In his novels, which was published in North Korea, featuring that the helper became more influential and the opponent more feeble in comparison with those in Han sul ya' s pre-liberation novels. And the novels published in North Korea placed not an individual but a group or a representative of a group as the main character. The female main character distinguished the structure of apprenticeship in the construction and grew up through a man-woman relationship in Han sul ya s pre-liberation novels. They are the male characters who influenced the female main character either positively or negatively in pre-liberation novels, but these gender roles disappeared in the construction later.-
