미국대학 교수연구업적평가의 실제

Abstract

이 논문은 미국대학의 교수 승진과 정년보장(tenure) 심사의 기준과 절차를 분석한 것이다. 여기에서는 예일(Yale University), 버클리(University of California, Berkeley), 위스콘신(University of Wisconsin, Madison), 노스캐롤라이나(University of North Carolina), 사우스캐롤라이나(University of South Carolina)대학의 사례를 중심으로 교수 승진과 정년보장 심사에 요구되는 연구업적 기준을 중점적으로 분석하였다. 특히 교수 연구업적 심사의 평가적 측면과 개발적 측면 모두를 강조하여 논의하였다. 이때 외부 심사위원의 역할과 선정을 위한 다양한 지침을 분석하였다. 그리고 정년보장 후(post-tenure)심사의 배경, 기준 및 절차를 사례별로 소개하였다. This study examines the criteria and procedures for tenure and promotion of faculty

members at five selected universities in the United States. The focus of the paper is on the

specific criteria of research and publication for tenure and promotion at each of the

institutions. The publication expectations for tenure as well as promotion from assistant to

associate and from associate to full professor in different disciplines are reviewed. The

study introduces both the evaluative approaches and the developmental approaches in the

assessment of faculty research productivity. The various stipulations in selecting the

external reviewers and their roles are discussed. The study investigates also the rationale,

criteria and procedures for post-tenure reviews.
