Abstract
The fall of the former Soviet Union and the East-European system as well as the Germany reunification have shaken the existing international political structure." In connection with this on-going change, Germany, which by then was regarded as a political dwarf, has risen to a political and diplomatic great power. At the same time, Germany tries to move Europe toward deeper integration.

This paper investigates the issue of what long term implications Europe"s integration might have for German national interests, after the German reunification and the conclusion of the Maastricht treaty.

Germany has to deal with the question of how it will satisfy the demands of its citizens domestically and how it will harmonize those demands with the demands of the other European nations, which have some reservations about German intentions. These suspicions are related to the German geopolitical position and its enhanced political power.

Germany added to these suspicions not only by rapidly pursuing Europe"s integration but also by pursuing its own national interest. Concerning the Europe"s integration method, it will consequently be the German goal to build up a federal system. But at the same time Germany also needs to consider possible oppositions from both domestic and international forces. In order to satisfy all these domestic and foreign demands, this paper argues, Germany will possibly pursue an "interdependent foreign policy".
