Abstract

Traditional approach treats foreign direct investment (FDI) as the outcome of competitive advantage based on possession of unique assets. However, there exist various types of FDI that are not well explained by this ownership-advantage approach. These investments include strategic response and investment from less developed countries. One important characteristic of these investments is that the firm, without any significant ownership advantage compared to its competitors, invests abroad to maintain or enhance its competitive position. This paper critically evaluates the existing literature with respect to these new types of FDI and suggests an alternative approach based on an imbalance of firms asset portfolio.
