Abstract

Lee Nung-Hwa is called the founder of religious studies in Korea. But there is a gap between his religious studies and our contemporary own. It results from the fact that we failed to succeed to his studies and to develop specific Korean religious studies. Since Korean War. contemporary religious studies originated from western academic societies have been so powerful in Korea that Lee Nung-Hwa's works have been marginalized. But he who wants to study 'the Korean Religion' cannot help ignoring Lee Nung-Hwa's works. since he can find a new insight in the old Lee Nung-Hwa's works. By tracing how he used some categories like 'religion(s),' 'Sin-gyo,' 'Mu-sok,' and so on, we can understand the precedent thoughts about Korean religion. And this is very important and necessary point where we start our own studies on Korean religion.
