This article contains an examination of the poems written by Lee Heub/李洽(1549~1608), poems that can be found inside Chwiam Yi-gong Shilgi/醉菴李公實記 (奎5645) which is currently in custody of the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean studies, Seoul National University.

Lee Heubs poems were written in the wake of two major wars with the Japanese (the Imjin-year war [壬辰倭亂] and the Jeongyu-year war [丁酉再亂]), the Joseon peoples efforts to get through the aftermath, and the shockwave that originated from the criminal case made against Jeong Yeo Rib/鄭汝立 (1546~1589). The most primary and elementary theory in poetry, which dictates Good poems only come from an author who is put in difficult situations with no way out (詩窮而後工), directly applies to Lee Heubs poems and writings.

The biggest political predicament that Lee Heub had to endure was his exile to the Okgu/沃溝 area in 1602. He was exiled because, when he was serving as a Heonnab/獻納 official in 1590, he expressed an opinion that Choi Yeong Gyeong/崔永慶 (1529~1590), whose letter box revealed letters exchanged between Choi and Jeong Yeo Rib, along with other unnamed poems (無名詩), should be re-interrogated (再鞫) by the government.

The central themes of Lee Heubs poems are filial piety toward parents and loyalty to the king. Through his poems, he criticized the politics of the time (時政) and how things were wrongfully going on in the world (世態). And he also expressed frustration over his fate that was not going well with the world. So quite naturally, he resorted to drinks, which not only encouraged his poem-writing but also served as a mitigator to all his sorrow and hatred. In his poems, the Okgu region where he was exiled, was defined and depicted as a lonely and quiet hermitage.
