- Abstract
- Every nation needs a standardized language and a unified orthography for modernization. So each nation pays attention to its own language and orthography, and formulates language policy in the course of modernization.
Korea also formulated its language policy to use Hangul in government documents in its early modern period, when the Reform of Kapo(1894) was carried out and modernization was begun. On the other hand, nongovernmental organizations carried on their own language movements for unifying orthography and popularizing Hangul.
In this essay, first of all. we first examine the concepts of language movement and language policy, and investigate the background of language movement and language policy during this period. Then we describe the concrete procedures of language movement and language policy. Concerning language movement, we examine the efforts for establishing a writing system, unifying orthography, readjusting vocabularies, and popularizing Hangul or orthography. In terms of language policy, we examine the policies for language usage, language standards, and language education.
