There were 6 counties along the Duman river in Hamkyeong Province.

The defence system of these counties was made up with guard posts,

beacon fire and supporting system - crossing support between forts and support

from southern Provinces. About 25 thousands farm soldiers, consisted with

infantries and cavalry, were resided in these counties, they had trained in

archery, gunshot and battle formation regularly. The bravery and fighting

ability of them were well-known all over the country. 70 guard posts were

arranged along the riverside and one officer and two soldiers were posted in

each. They had to observe the opposite site, announce an alarm and prohibit

the violation of the border. In the winter, northern army commander of

Hamkyeong Province(Bukbyeongsa) had been stationed at temporary headquarter

(Haengyoung) in Jongseong - the center of 6 counties - to provide against

invasion. In late Joseon Dynasty, the possibility of conflict was decreased,

but alert and military drills didn't become relaxed, because these counties

were northern forefront bases of Joseon.
