인격에 대해 영혼-육체의 통일성이 지니는 의미 : 토마스 아퀴나스의 작품들을 중심으로

Abstract

'인격과 영혼과 육체의 통일성이란 두 주제들은 인간을 이해하 는 데 매우 중요하지만 그 연관성이 충분히 주목받지 못했다. 본 논문에서 는 토마스 아퀴나스의 󰡔대이교도대전󰡕제II권의 텍스트들을 중심으로 육체 와 영혼의 합일에 대한 그의 주장들을 분석함으로써 토마스가 인격 개념 과 이를 통해서 도달하고자 하는 목표를 탐구하고자 한다. 지성적 영혼과 육체의 합일을 반대하는 플라톤주의자들의 입장과 인간에게 다수의 실체적 형상이 있다는 이론을 논박하는 과정을 다룬 후, 토마스가 자신의 입장을 적극적으로 표명하는 명제들, 즉 지성적 영혼은 인간의 유일한 실체적 형 상이며 인간 영혼은 지성적 실체이면서도 육체의 형상이라는 주장들을 검토한다. 이를 통해서 영혼과 육체의 통합이 완결된 전체라고 규정된 인 간 인격을 위한 필수 조건이며, 인간 본성에 따른 것이라는 사실이 밝혀진 다. 토마스는 육체에 대해서 긍정적으로 평가하면서도 인간 영혼을 물질적 실체와 분리된 실체 사이의 '지평'이라고 규정함으로써 육체에 대해 지나친 과소평가나 과대평가를 모두 지양한다. 이러한 사실들은 토마스가 주장했 던 통합적인 인격관에 대한 정확한 가치를 평가하기 위한 후속 연구들을 위한 기초가 될 것으로 기대한다. The conception of person as a unity of soul and body is very important for understanding humanity. However, the relationship between the two parts has attracted little attention or scholarly debate. This paper provides a textual analysis of Book II, Summa contra Gentiles in which Thomas Aquinas provides us with his understanding of the human person as the unity of soul and body. Aquinas first refutes Platos position, who denies the essential union of the intellective soul with the body and posits that in man there are many substantial forms. After a careful analysis and interpretation of Aquinass positions, this paper will critically reflect on his theses which posits the intellective soul as being a unique substantial form of man and the human soul as being both the intellectual substance and form of the body. This study seeks to demonstrate the unity of soul and body as a necessary condition for the person to attain his whole, complete human nature. Aquinas regards the body affirmatively and describes the human soul as the borderline between corporeal and separate substances, preventing the body from being both under-and overestimated. This study seeks to provide a clarification but also an appraisal of the true value of Aquinass synthetic treatment of the human person.
