에른스트 마하의 과학사상

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 에른스트 마하의 과학사상이 지닌 핵심적 면모 를 기술하는 것이다. 마하는 사상사적으로 19세기와 20세기를 연결하는 중 요한 교량이었고, 특히 빈 대학의 교수로 활동했던 시기를 전후로 유럽 사 상계의 한 구심점 역할을 했다. 그는 과학의 출현과 발달을 사유경제성과 진화론적 적응이라는 관점에서 통일성 있게 해명하며, 그의 과학철학은 사 실상 최초의 체계적인 진화론적 인식론을 함축한다. 그의 과학사상은 세계 와 감각의 관계에 대해 요소의 개념을 중심으로 하는 흥미로운 철학적 도 식을 제시한다. 이러한 도식은 다양하게 분화된 개별과학의 잠재적 통일성 을 암시하며, 그의 이런 관점은 빈 학단의 통일과학운동에 중요한 철학적 배경을 제공하였다. 유명한 뉴튼 비판을 낳은 경험비판의 관점은 반형이상 학이라는 마하 사상의 핵심적 태도와 이어져 있다. 그러나 그의 반형이상 학은 형이상학 일반의 제거라는 의미가 아니라 과학과 형이상학의 분리라 는 테제로 이해되어야 한다. Ernst Mach was a central figure of the fin de siècle and an important bridge between the 19th and 20th century in the history of European thought. This paper aims to delineate the essential features of Machs philosophy of science. For Mach, the aim of science is economy of thinking (Denkökonomie); science is a system of economical description of the phenomena we encounter. Sciences are developed through adaptation, adaptation of the thought to facts and adaptation among the thoughts. Machs philosophy of science manifests a pioneer version of evolutionary epistemology. He develops an ontology, a type of neutral monism, where the notion of elements plays a key role. This provides a philosophical foundation for the potential unity of the physical and biological sciences and of psychology. His empiriocriticism, which was the source of his famous critique of Newtonian absolute space, results in an anti-metaphysical stance. Machs Anti-Metaphysik, though, should be understood as a thesis on the separation of science and metaphysics, not as propaganda for the annihilation of metaphysics per se.
