Abstract

This case study of design research and design thinking illustrates opportunities for creating
holistic and multi-dimensional solutions to social and environmental problems while stimulating
economic development and feelings of empowerment.
In 1999, a group of designers spent two weeks in a rural South African village to explore
and conceptually address issues of pure water and sanitation within the context of a social
and economic ecosystem. The project demonstrates how design for the social sector and design
for the bottom of the pyramid can be addressed more successfully as a collaboration of
citizens, entrepreneurs, governmental organizations, and others than as a narrowly dened
problem for experts. It also demonstrates how design research, by unpacking the complexity
of a local ecosystem, reveals the local resources, levers, pressures, and opportunities needed
for an economically, environmentally, and culturally sustainable solution.
Case studies of design thinking for the social sector are rare because the governments,
NGOs, and businesses that carry out such projects usually do not consider design as a relevant
resource, except for packaging and public relations. This case study adds to the literature.
As a result of this experience, the authors rm, Continuum, established its social innovation
practice to work in partnership with governments, NGOs, and businesses to better address
tough social-sector and bottom of-the-pyramid challenges.
