The purpose of this paper is to review the development of metrical phonology, chiefly the version applied to the prosodic scansion. Firstly, Kiparsky(1975) is reviewed. Main emphasis is laid upon eliciting the strong points of Kiparsky s new model of scansion compared with the preceding proposals made by traditional metrists and the early generative phonologists, such as Halle-Keyser(1966, 1971a, b) or Magnuson-Ryder (1971). Attempts have been made to show the aspects of scansion which cannot be explained by the earlier models like stress maximum' and to show how natural and principled explanation they find in Kiparskys new model. Secondly, Kiparsky(1977) is reviewed. Endeavor has been made to show the difference between Kiparsky (1977) and Kiparsky (1977), which is based upon the metric stress model of Liberman (1975). I have tried to show the contributions of Liberman's new theory to revising Kiparskys earlier model and to show how much more Kiparskys new model can account for what could not be explained by his earlier model. Lastly, C.W. Kims recent article (1981) is reviewed with the puppose of exploring the possibility of applying the new theory of metrical phonology to the scansion of traditional Korean poems, sijo. It is found that the new model provides us with new device of analyzing the structure of sijo poems.-
