근대적인 자이나교 공동체의 형성: 성지 소유권 공방에 대한 고찰

Abstract

인도사 연구에서 시대를 구분하는 방식과 근대의 시작 기점은 매우 중요한 문제로, 많은 연구가 근대성(modernity)과 이를 반영하는 정치제도나 경제체제를 중심으로 이루어졌다. 그러나 이러한 제도나 체제를 받아들이는데 기반이 되는 근대적인(또는 서구적인) 사상, 역사관과 종교관이 형성되는 과정을 짚어보는 것은 보다 어려운 일이다. 구체적인 사료가 충분히 남지 않거나, 하나의 사건이나 정책으로 뚜렷이 족적을 남기는 경우가 많지 않기 때문이다. 또한, 근대 국민 국가(modern nation-state)가 일어나고 국가가 역사 및 종교와 관련된 제반사상을 결정하고 집대성하며 통제하고 서술하는 주체로 부상하면서(Cohn 1996: 3) 국민 국가의 이상에 부합하지 않는 사상에 대한 연구를 상대적으로 통제하는 양상도 보여왔다. 특히 식민 통치와 종교에 따른 분립을 경험하면서 남아시아의 학계는 종교 공동체에 관한 한 주로 힌두교와 이슬람 두 종교를 중점적으로 논의하였다. 이 논문은 인도의 소수 종교 중 하나인 자이나교의 근대적인 성장을 살펴보고 있다. 특히 자이나교에서 가장 성스러운 성지를 둘러싼 일련의 법정 공방을 통해 자이나교도들이 능동적으로 공동체를 형성하고 근대적인 종교관을 정착시킨 과정을 고찰하고자 한다.

Śatrunjaya, located in Gujarat, India, is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites for Śvetāmbara Mūrtipūjak Jains, who comprise the majority of Jains in western India. However, several aspects of the site, including the historiography, patronage, architecture, and painted maps that depict Śatrunjaya, suggest that the site acquired its current form only during the 19th century. In this paper, I argue that these changes can be linked to a series of legal cases related to the ownership of Śatrunjaya, which continued from 1820 to 1926. Due to the extremely public nature of the disputes, these legal cases played a pivotal role in the formation of the Śvetāmbara Mūrtipūjak Jain community in western India. Especially, as the legal cases quickly shifted their focus to the definition and rights of ownership of Śatrunjaya, British concepts of ownership and rights were gradually accepted and appropriated by the Jain patrons throughout the 19th century.
