관료학자 이산해의 학문과 현실대응

Abstract

야계 이산해(1539~1609)는 조선중기 선조 시대에 북인의 영수로서 활약한 인물이다. 고려말을 대표하는 지성인 이곡과 이색을 배출한 한산 이씨 명문가 출신으로, 학문적으로도 큰 성과를 보였다. 특히 그의 숙부 이지함은 이산해의 초기 학문 형성에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 그러나 이산해는 학문적 성취의 측면 보다는 관료학자로선의 특징을 잘 보여주는 인물로 이해된다.

본 연구에서는 조선중기 명재상으로 활약하면서 학문적 정치적으로 주요한 위치에 있었던 이산해의 학문과 현실대응 양상을 검토해 보고자 한다. 이산해의 학문이나 정치적 위치에 비해서 그에 대한 연구가 상대적으로 연구가 부진하다고 여겨지기 때문이다. 최근의 조선중기 사상사 연구에서는 기존에 이해되어진 것 보다는 훨씬 더 개방적인 측면이 있음이 여러 연구에서 밝혀지고 있다. 이산해 역시 이러한 흐름을 일부 대변해주는 학자이자 관료로 파악된다.

이산해는 정치의 일선에서 활약한 실무관료로서의 입지를 지니고 있었던 만큼 성리학의 이론 문제에 천착하기 보다는 다양한 학문과 사상을 섭렵하였으며 현실론, 변통론의 입장이 강하였다.

따라서 본고에서는 우선 관료학자라는 특징에 주목하여 이산해에 대한 연구를 진행하였다.

In the Joseon society of the mid-16th century, many scholars who were also serving as governmental officials, were beginning to progressively address social and economic problems, in quite an active fashion. Yi San Hae was one of the most memorable cases. His studies were learned from Seo Gyeong Deok, and they featured a practical nature which we can usually see from Yi Ji Ham"s works. His economic philosophy and his arguments for addressing the real life problems were quite detailed, and were mostly devised to deal with the impoverished general public and the already drained dynastic treasury.

He suggested that Dunjeon/屯田 garrison farms be established, and that an aggressive salt(煮鹽) policy be employed. He grew up in a coastline area, so he was naturally very eager to tap into certain maritime resources like salt. His view upon the war with the Japanese that had broken out in the 1590s(the "Imjin Wae"ran") is also worth noticing, as he thought very highly of Weon Gyun"s achievements, and argued that the Joseon navy(舟師) should be enhanced and reinforced, as the Joseon forces were able to defeat the Japanese with its naval forces.
