서울대 정체성, 어떻게 발전시킬 것인가

Abstract

정체성에는 세 가지가 있다. 역사적 정체성, 자기정체성, 그리고 사회적 정

체성이 그것이다. 이 세 종류의 정체성이 일치하는 경우는 드물며, 특히 자기

정체성과 사회적 정체성은 거의 언제나 일정한 간극을 보이게 마련이다. 그

런가 하면 역사적 정체성과 자기정체성이 충돌하는 경우도 있을 수 있다. 현

재 서울대 정체성의 심각한 문제는 이 세 정체성이 경우에 따라 중대한 결

손을 보여 예컨대 국립대로서의 정체성이 최근에 급격히 약화되고 있을 뿐

만 아니라, 이것들 사이에 참으로 쉽게 화해하기 어려운 괴리와 오해가 상존

한다는 점이다. 특히 서울대 구성원들의 자기정체성과 외부인들이 갖고 있

는 정체성 사이에는 메우기 어려운 틈이 있는 듯 하며, 바로 이것이 현재 ‘서

울대 문제’의 근본적인 요인의 하나이다. 이의 극복을 위해 필자는 21세기의

서울대가 추구할 정체성의 상(像)으로서 ‘글로컬(glocal) 대학’을 제시한다. 그

리고 이를 구체화하기 위한 사전작업의 일환으로 ‘서울대연구’를 추진할 것

을 제안한다. 결국 위의 연구를 기반으로 서울대의 지식생태계를 ‘세계성’으

로 끌어올리고 ‘지방성’으로 하방(下放)하는 구체적인 발전전략이 수립되어

야 할 것이다.

There are three kinds of identity: historical identity, self-identity, and social identity.

It is rare that three kinds of identity correspond with one another, and especially

it would be bound that there is always a certain distance between self-identity and

social identity. Also there could be instances where historical identity and self-identity

collide head-on. A serious problem of Seoul National University’s identities is that it’

s identity as a national university are rapidly eroding in recent years. In addition, there

are gaps and misunderstandings between three kinds of it’s identity which are indeed

easily irreconcilable. Particularly there is a deep divide difficult to bridge between selfidentity

of SNU and laymen’s perceptions. It is one of basic factors of current ‘SNU

problem’. In order to overcome this problem, I suggest ‘the glocal university’ as model

of new identity that SNU should pursue in the 21st century. And I propose ‘the study of

SNU/Snulogy’ as a part of preliminary works to take a concrete form of it. Eventually

it should be made a development strategy to raise the ecosystem of knowledge of SNU

into the level of ‘globality’ and to go down it into several dimension of ‘locality’ on the

basis of Snulogy.
