학문의 비환원주의적 통섭을 위한 초분과적 기획과 문화연구

Abstract

이 글은 최근에 들어와서 한국 학계에서 학문 간 융·복합 담론과 함께

자주 논의되고 있는 학문 간 통섭 제안에 대한 비판적 검토에 해당한다. 학

문 통섭 담론은 에드워드 윌슨의 《통섭》이 한국어로 번역된 이후 급증하기

시작했지만 윌슨의 통섭론이 자연과학 중심이라는 점 때문에 추구하는 지식

의 성격이나 그 가치 지향이 자연과학과는 크게 다른 학문 분야, 특히 인문

학으로부터 적잖은 반발을 불러 일으켰다. 하지만 이 논문은 환원주의적 통

섭에 대한 인문학의 우려를 공유하면서도, 인문학 다수의 문제점이라 할 수

있는 분과주의적 경향을 극복하려면 학문 간 통섭은 필요하다고 보고, 다만

이때 요청되는 통섭은 비환원주의적이야 한다는 관점을 취한다. 나아가서 이

논문은 비환원주의적 통섭의 한 모델을 분과들 너머라는 시각을 제시하고

있는 바사라브 니콜레스쿠의 초분과성 기획에서 찾고, 인문학 분야에서 비

슷한 통섭 작업을 해온 사례로서 20세기 중반 영국에서 제출되어 오늘날까

지 진보적 지적 기획으로 작용해온 문화연구 전통을 제시하고 있다. 문화연

구는 여기서 과학 분야에서의 복잡성 연구와 함께 현재 지배적인 지식생산

구도를 뒤흔들며 학문 간 비환원주의적 통섭을 위한 초분과적인 진보적 기

획으로 제시된다. 이런 점에서 이 논문은 최근 문화연구와 현존하는 제3의

문화에 대해 부정적 견해를 제출한 슬라보이 지젝의 입장과는 거리를 두고

있다.

This paper starts with a critical view of the consilience discourse that has recently

appeared in the South Korean academia in the wake of Edward Wilsons proposal for

consilience among the academic disciplines. Despite its wide circulation as a catchword

for cooperative activities across the disciplines, the proposal prompted a growing

backlash among humanists who became worried that it may result in reducing the

humanities to the natural sciences. While sharing the humanists concern, this paper

argues that consilience among the academic disciplines is indispensable if we want to

overcome the overall tendency of the humanities to disciplinary division ― adding,

however, the proviso that the consilience, in turn, must be non-reductionist. More

specifically, this article suggests that Basarab Nicolescus notion of transdisciplinarity

can provide a non-reductionist consilience model and that in the branch of the

humanities, the British cultural studies tradition has been functioning as such a model.

In that it sees cultural studies as a powerful candidate for a radical transdiscipinary

project for non-reductionist consilience, this paper distinguishes itself from Slavoj

Zizeks stance that remains blind to the possible cooperation between cultural studies

and the actually existing third culture.
