『무정(無情)』의 근대성과 정육(情育)

Abstract

『무정』은 흔히 한국 최초의 근대소설이라고 한다. 근대소설이니만름 고전소설과 차별되는 요소가 있고， 최초이니만큼 고전소설의 흔적도 적지 않다. 이 때문에 『무정』의 근대소설적 수준에 대해서는 보는 사람에 따라 완전히 정반대의 견해가 제기되었다. 근대문학 전공지들은 주로 근대소설적 성격에 초점을 맞추어 그 성과를 높이 평가하는 반면, 고전문학 전공자들은 고전소설과의 연속성을 강조하면서 그 근대소설적 성취를 낮추어 보는 경향이 강했다. 작품을 바라보는 위치에 따라 다른 결론에 이르렀던 것이다. 본고의 출발점은 지금까지 『무정』을 바라본 주된 시점이라 할 수 있는 근대문학 쪽이 아니라 상당 기간 재론되지 않았던 고전문학적 시점에서 바라본 것이다. 『무정』이 지닌 고전소설적 요소를 면밀히 살핀 다음, 이를 토대로 근대소설적 요소를 찾아낼 것인데 『무정』의 근대소설적 성취의 핵심은 결론부터 미리 말하면 감정, 감각, 욕망의 표현에 있다.

Mujung(無情) has been called the first modern novel in Korea. Mujung has the several differences with the pre-modern novels. The most outstanding factor is expressing emotions. Expressing emotions is originated by the thought on literature of Lee Gwangsu(李光洙). The thought was that literature had to make people vivid emotionally. He thought that literature had to be the text of educating emotions(情育). Some scholars like Hatano Setsuko(波田野節子) insisted that the thought of Lee was originated in Japanese thoughts like Takayama Chokyu(高山樗牛), but basically the thought was from the reaction of Neo-confusian thought of Chosun.
