한국 가톨릭 여성에게 고통과 신비체험: 황데레사와 윤율리아의 자전적 기술을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 필자가 연구프로젝트의 일환으로 여성 종교지도자들의 '자전적 기술'(autobiograghical writing)을 바탕으로 이들의 종교적 성장과정과 종교체험 내용을 비교분석하면서 갖게 된 일련의 문제의식과 연결된다. 물론 이들 여성의 자전적 기술을 그들의 삶을 '있는 그대로' 기록하기 위한 것이 아니라 자신들의 신비/종교체험을 중심으로 이전의 삶과 이후의 삶을 (재)해석하고 (재)의미화 하여 하나의 일관된 자신들의 '구원의 역사'를 구성하여 자신들의 현재의 종교적 역할이나 위상을 정당화하려는 의도를 담고 있다. 이런 의미에서 이들의 시비체험 또한 기술의 과정을 거치면서 재의미화 되고 해당 종교전통의 맥락에서 재구성된 결과물이다. 본 논문에서는 한국 가톨릭에 한정하여 자신들의 '사적 계시'를 토대로 평신도 중심의 마리아 신심운동을 전개한 대표적인 두 여성, 황데레사와 운율리아의 자전적 기술에 초점을 맞추고자 한다. 필자가 이 두 여성에게 일차적으로 주의를 기울이게 된 것은 한국 여성 종교지도자들의 자전적 기술을 수집하고 조사하면서 이들 중 대다수가 몸 혹은 육체적 고통(질병)을 하나의 중요한 매개로 종교적 자각 내지 신비체험에 이르고 있음을 알 수 있었으나, 특히 이 두 여성의 경우 기술하고 있는 육체적 고통이 매우 극단적이고, 항시적이라는 점에서 거의 '자학적'으로 보일만큼 두드러졌기 때문이다. 따라서 필자는 어떤 개인적 조건 그리고 종교전통이 이 두 여성들로 하여금 '고통'에 몰두하게 했으며 결국 고통을 종교적 차원으로 승화시켰는가에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 여기서 명확히 하고자 하는 것은 필자는 여성들의 신비체험을 '고통'이라는 주제를 통해 풀어나가고자 하는 것이지 결코 신비체험의 복합적 구조를 '고통'이란 단일 요소로 환원시키려는 의도를 가지고 있지 않다는 것이다. 본 논문에서는 우선 이 두 여성의 삶에서 그들의 육체에 가해진 정신적, 물리적 폭력의 경험을 다루고, 이어서 어떻게 이들이 이러한 폭력의 경험으로 인한 고통과 트라우마를 종교적 의미에서 긍정적으로(재)의미화 하고 있는가를 살펴본 후, 마지막으로 여성에게 몸 혹은 육체적 고통/금욕이 어떤 구원론적 의미를 포함하고 있는가를 보다 넓은 맥락에서 고찰하기 위해서 서양 중세 여성 신비주의자들에 대한 논의를 포함하였다. Women's religious Autobiographies serve as important materials to look into certain circumstances and processes in which women became to be religiously awakened and to realize their calling as religious leaders. Certainly, autobiographical writing is not merely record of what really happened but reconstructed narrative, in which the writer attempts to imbue his(her) whole life with a sense of coherence and in doing so, to explain or legitimate what helshe became to be at present. Especially for laywomen whose religious calling is easily ignored and oppressed by religious authorities, autobiographical writing remains as one of the few channels for them to let their voice be heard. This paper centered on the utobiographical writings of two Korean Catholic laywomen, Theresa Hwang and Julia Youn who played an leading part in popularizing devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary in Korean Catholic Church, gathering followers around them as well as meeting with strong opposition fiom Korean Church. While the lives of these women have a lot in common, their sense of "suffering" is so intense, that it needs close scrutiny. Firstly, these women's experience of violence/violation on their body is traced. Secondly. it is described, how the sufferingltrauma caused by their formal experiences turn into religious meaningful one after their mystical experience, and how physical suffering is actively used by them as an essential medium to communicate and to be unified with the divine beings (the Jesus and the Virgin Mary). Lastly, it is discussed what the body or physical suffering/ascetism means for women in a soteriological sense. To bring this theme in the broader context, discussion on Medieval female mystics is taken into consideration.
