트라시마코스 정의(正義) 규정의 일관성 고찰

Abstract

트라시마코스는 『국가』 1권에서 정의에 관한 세 가지 규정을 제시한다. 1) 정의는 더 강한 자의 이득이다. 2) 정의는 통치자들에게 복종하는 것이다. 3) 정의는 남에게 좋은 것이다. 그런데 세 가지 규정들 사이에 일관성은 없어 보인다. 적어도 더 강한 자의 입장에서 1)과 3)은 서로 모순된다. 규정들의 표현만 놓고 보면, 1)∼3) 사이에 일관성은 없다. 하지만 트라시마코스가 염두에 두고 있는 사태에 초점을 맞춰서 보면, 1)∼3) 사이에는 일관성이 있다. 피치자가 통치자에게 복종하여 통치자에게 이득을 가져다주는 것이 정의이고, 통치자가 부정의를 행하여 자기 이득만을 갖게 되는 것이 부정의이다. 트라시마코스에 따르면, 참주는 부정의한 사람의 전형이다. 이런 측면에서 1)∼3) 사이에는 일관성이 있다. 이 경우에 세 가지 규정 중 3)이 트라시마코스의 궁극적인 규정이다. 그가 클레이토폰의 제안을 거부함으로써 2)보다는 1)을 궁극적인 규정으로 여긴다. 1)에는 정의에 관한 언급만이 있는 데 반하여, 3)에는 부정의에 관한 언급도 있다는 점에서, 3)이 1)보다 정의와 부정의에 관해 더 많은 내용을 담고 있다. 결론적으로 3)이 그의 궁극적인 규정이다. Thrasymachus presents three definitions of justice in Platos Republic Ⅰ: 1) Justice is what is advantageous for the stronger, 2) It is just to obey to rulers, and 3) Justice is the good of another. It seems that there is no consistency among these three definitions. At least, from the point of view of the stronger, definitions 1 and 3 are inconsistent. With a focus on the definitions' expressions, there is no consistency among these three definitions. However, by focusing on the situation that he keeps in mind, it is possible to find consistency among the three definitions. It is just that the ruled obey the rulers and give them advantages, and it is unjust that rulers act unjustly and give themselves advantages. According to Thrasymachus, the tyrant is a model of the unjust. From this aspect, consistency can be found among the three definitions. In this case, the third definition is his ultimate definition. He considers that the first definition is superior to the second definition by rejecting Clitophon's suggestion. The first definition is regarding only justice, but the third definition is regarding both justice and injustice. Since the third definition contains more contents about justice and injustice than the first one does, it is concluded that the third definition is his ultimate definition.
