Joseph Conrads The Secret Agent questions the authority and absoluteness
of the State through the demonstration of myriads of abnormal individuals.
Underlying the seemingly private tragedy of Winnie and Verloc is the State
and its obsession towards normality. Abnormal behaviors of the characters
are described more as symptoms of the intrinsic violence of the national authority
than as peculiar anomaly. Tenaciously deconstructing the dichotomy
of normal/abnormal, Conrad also reveals the instability of the common belief
in scientific knowledge, and thus presents ironic narrative style in The Secret
Agent.
Who is the mad one indeed? Comparing Winnie with Stevie, the narrator
blurs the boundary of madness. Still, many of the characters regard the State
and the police as the agents serving to protect them by securing the normality
of the society. However, the normality they protect is often rather awkward
and coercive. Only under collective pretense, can the police and the State function
normally. The punishment imposed on abnormal individuals consolidates
the absoluteness of the State in each individuals perception. Added on
the skepticism towards the authority of the State is still more acerbic sarcasm
cast on the anarchists. Although by definition defiant against the established
orders, the anarchists in the novel turns out to be acquiescent individuals
seeking the safeguard of the society.
Adopting the scheme of ironic narrative, Conrad involves the readers in
the process of suspecting the social perception of normality and the security it substantiates. Conrads attempt may also be considered with regard to Lukács theory of the novel. While portraying the hopelessness and vulgarity
of reality, The Secret Agent paradoxically illuminates significant struggle
against the absoluteness which is not real.
