I think that we communicate only too well, in our silence, in what is unsaid, and that what takes place is a continual evasion, desperate rear-guard attempts to keep ourselves to ourselves. Communication is too alarming. To enter into someone elses life is too frightening. To disclose the poverty within us is too fearsome a possibility. This paper aims to analyze the difference between two couples in D. H. Lawrences Women in Love by focusing on the way the characters communicate with each other. The four main characters, Ursula, Birkin, Gudrun, and Gerald constantly make conversation within the novel, and the ways the characters deal with the conversation reveal their attitude toward the surrounding world. While the conversation between Gudrun and Gerald consist of suggestions, tacit agreements, and knowledge mutually approved in silence, Ursula and Birkin ceaselessly produce discordance between them through verbal contestation which leads to the dialectic process of reconciliation. Such contrasting aspects of the two conversations show the characters different attitudes toward surrounding universe. The image of surface provides an important device for analyzing the two types of communication that are the characterizing factors in illuminating the two different ways of being. The attitude of not trying to look through the surface is related to the tendency to avoid the uncomfortable reality. The self-deceptive escapism of Gudrun and Gerald is represented by her refusal to dive into the dark abyss of water, and his unwillingness to talk about the violences and wounds they inflict on each other. Such escapism blocks them from recognizing reality of the surrounding world and makes them produce a false knowledge of it in their self-deceptive imagination confined within the unpenetrable ego. In contrast, Ursula and Birkin have capability to accept the dark and unknown knowledge of the world beyond what they can see. Consequently, this attitude of openness to the unknown future enables Ursula and Birkin to move on courageously to a new life. | - |
