A comment on 'the impact of statins, ace inhibitors and gastric acid suppressants on pneumonia mortality in a UK general practice population cohort'

Abstract

We read with interest the recently published article by Myles et al.1 evaluating whether statins, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) have an impact on short-term and long-term mortality in pneumonia cases. They concluded that the use of statins was associated with a decreased risk of short-term and long-term mortality following pneumonia. 1 However, we have some comments concerning the study design and results.
