E: To compare midtrimester maternal plasma concentrations
of angiopoietin 1, angiopoietin 2, and placental growth factor
between pregnant women who subsequently develop preeclampsia
and those who do not.
STUDY DESIGN: Midtrimester maternal plasma was collected and preserved
at 70°C when amniocentesis was performed. Cases included
37 samples of those who subsequently developed preeclampsia, and
matched controls were from those who did not develop preeclampsia.
Angiopoietin 1, angiopoietin 2, and placental growth factor concentrations
were measured by ELISA method, and compared with Mann-
Whitney U test. P value .05 was considered significant.
RESULTS: In pregnant women who subsequently developed preeclampsia,
midtrimester maternal plasma concentrations of angiopoietin
1 and angiopoietin 2 were significantly higher and placental
growth factor concentration was significantly lower than those who
did not develop preeclampsia (angiopoietin 1: 10610 [3074-19720] vs
7773 [862-24421] pg/mL, P .031; angiopoietin 2: 31038 [4666-
81199] vs 18445 [4199-49745] pg/mL, P .001; placental growth factor:
87.1 [14.2-774.3] vs 148.8 [57.2-425.6] pg/mL, P .001).
CONCLUSION: Midtrimester maternal plasma concentrations of angiopoietin
1, angiopoietin 2, and placental growth factor is risk factors for
the subsequent development of preeclampsia.
