Abstract
(The Postmodern
Japanese contemporary art is enjoying the newly gained international recognition through its introduction to the art scenes in the United States. In analyzing the historical and ideological manifestations of Japanese contemporary art in this essay, two theses, 'The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge'(1979) and 'Answering the Questions: What
is Postmodern?'(1982), by the French philosopher JeanFrancois Lyotard will provide theoretical frameworks. Japanese artist Takashi Murakami's work and his visions are representative of a facet of contemporary Japanese visual culture and the society in general. Lyotard's theory introduces the definition of postmodern in a very decisive yet encompassing way. He writes "Simplifying to the extreme, I define postmodernism as incredulity toward metanarratives", thus anticipating the break from the conventionalized modernist socio-intellectual structures. Lyotard argues that the knowledge of the world is organized as narratives, yet the ruling narrative, thus meta or grand narratives of the modernity, has failed its emancipatory purpose. A modernist idea of progression was at the core of these grand narratives, such as belief in the progress through achieving true knowledge or the anticipation of achieving freedom through emancipation, yet as witnessed from the Auschwitz, the narrative system that held modern era has failed and lost its continuity, further replaced by a new system of efficiency.
