Abstract

1. Since years before, you have mentioned that design should learn to break its boundaries while it embraces culture. Your recent design works also cleverly delivers Asias colors based on Asian cultural characteristics. Please share us your insights and your reviews (from past 40 yrs of your experience) on contemporary concept, expression & styles from Contemporary Design with Asian cultures perspective. It is no doubt that design always contains the cultural factor. Designers works often echo their life experience, feelings and traditional culture. Culture is something more than an object which is alive and has its continuity. It should never be blockaded in the past but integrated into the attitude and sentiments of the modern way of life. This is what breaking boundaries means but we should absolutely not abandon our traditions. Living in Hong Kong and China, it is expected that I am under the great influence of (greatly influenced by) Chinese traditional culture. However, I am also frequently exposed to the culture of the west and also the of East-asia and so this is the reason that you can see a lot of Asian cultural features in my design. In the early 60s, I was greatly influenced by the idea of Bauhaus while learning art and design. In the same period, my design showed a lot of modern elements. However, I realized I didnt really understand and pay attention to the traditional culture of my own country after working as a designer for a few years. Therefore, I returned to Chinese culture, learning and trying to put cultural featuresinto my works. Starting from the 80s, I further merged my design with traditional eastern philosophical thinking. Not relying on the usage of traditional graphics and existing elements to present Chinese culture, I wished to infuse the quintessence of Chinese culture into my design, merging the two into one. As an avid artist Chinese ink painting, I easily put aesthetic qualities of ink art into my designs. In recent years, I always combine calligraphy with my works. Designers will have different ways of expressing their idea in different stage of life; however it never strays far from its own culture. Traditional culture will transform into modern thoughts in different period of time and different living environment. 1. 선생님께서는 오래 전 문화를 품을 줄 알되 그 틀을 깰 줄 아는 디자인을 언급하셨습니다. 지 금 현재도 역시 아시아의 문화적 특성을 지닌 아시아만의 색을 가진 디자인을 추구하시는데, 40 년 넘게 작업하시면서 과거의 아시아 문화를 가진 현대 디자인의 개념에서 현재의 개념, 표현 및 스타일의 변화에 대해 느끼신 점을 말씀해 주십시오. 디자인이 항상 문화적 요소를 수반하는 것은 의심의 여지가 없습니다. 디자이너의 작업은 일반적으로 그들의 삶의 경험, 감성 그리고 전통문화를 반영합니다. 문화는 오브제 이상 의 것으로 살아있고 연속적인 것입니다. 그것은 과거로 단절되는 것이 아니라 현대 삶에 태 도(attitude)이자 정서로서 융합되어야 합니다. 경계를 허문다는 것은 바로 이런 의미이며, 우리는 고유의 전통을 절대 버려서는 안 됩니다. 중국과 홍콩에 살며, 제가 중국 전통 문화에 영향을 받을 것이라 (중국 전통문화의 영향 하 에 있을 것이라) 생각될 수도 있습니다. 하지만 저는 서양이나 동아시아 문화에도 자주 노출 되며, 제 디자인에서 아시아 문화적 특징들을 찾아볼 수 있는 이유는 여기에 기인하였습니다. 1960년대 초기에 예술과 디자인을 배우며 저는 바우하우스의 아이디어에 많은 영향을 받 았습니다. 당시에 저의 디자인은 많은 모던 요소들을 보여주었습니다. 그러나 몇 년 동안 디자이너로 활동하며 모국의 문화에 대해 주의를 두지 않았고 또 제대로 이해하고 있지 않 음을 깨달았습니다. 그래서 저는 중국 문화로 돌아가 제 작업들에 문화적 특징들을 반영 하기 위해 공부와 시도를 했습니다. 1980년대부터 저는 더 나아가 저의 디자인에 전통적인 동양철학 사상을 반영했습니다. 전통적 그래픽이나 기존의 중국문화를 상징하는 요소들 의 사용에 의지하는 것이 아니라, 디자인에 중국 문화의 정수를 저의 디자인에 불어넣어, 두 가지가 하나로 어우러지기를 원했습니다. 열렬한 중국 문화 예술가로서, 저는 묵화의 미적 인 품격을 저의 디자인에 쉽게 넣을 수 있었습니다. 최근에는 항상 서예를 저의 작업과 결합 시킵니다. 디자이너들은 삶의 여러 시기에 따라 그들의 아이디어를 표현하는 방법들을 다르게 가질 것입니다. 하지만 그것들은 절대 그 고유의 문화와 멀지 않은 연관성을 가질 것입니다. 전 통적 문화는 다른 시기와 다른 생활 환경에서 결국 현대적 생각으로 발전될 것입니다.
