타자만들기": 한국사회와 이주노동자의 재현

Abstract

외국인 이주노동자들은 또한 자신들의 일터를 중심으로 특정 국가나 민족 중심의 집단 거주지를 형성했다. 조선족 노동자들이 모여 사는 서울의 가리봉동이나 나이지리아 노동자들이 집단 거주하는 해방촌뿐만 아니라, 경기도 안산의 국경 없는 마을4) 이나 파주와 포천일대의 소규모 공단지역은 다양한 민족 집단들이 지역공동체를 만들어 나가고 있다. 안산의 국경 없는 마올 에서는 한국인들과 외국인 이주노동자들이 동네 골목을 함께 청소하는 행사나 다양한 문화행사를 기획하면서 새로운 형태의 다문화 공동체를 형성하려는 노력을 하고 있다. 또한 한국인과 혼인한 외국인 이주노동자들의 증가는 코시안(Korean과 Asian의 합성어) 가족과 같은 새로운 문화가족을 등장시켰다. 이러한 변화는 외국인 이주노동자를 지역공동체의 일원으로 받아들여야 하는 문제에서부터 귀화한 이주노동자나 한국인 배우자와의 사이에서 태어난 자녀들을 국민의 일원으로 포함시키는 문제를 제기한다. 단일혈통과 공통의 언어를 민족 또는 국민정체성의 핵심으로 삼아 온 한국인들로 하여금 피부색과 언어, 문화가 다른 사람들을 같은 국민으로 받아들여야 하는 국민정체성의 변화를 촉구하고 있는 것이다.

본 논문에서는 이러한 배경에서 한국사회에 등장한 외국인 이주노동자들이 그 동안 한국사회에서 어떻게 받아들여지고 재현되어 왔는가를 살피고자 한다. 한국 사회에서 외국인 노동자들은 가난과 굶주림을 피해온 불쌍한 노동자, 한국의 법률을 어기고 입국한 밀입국자나 불법체류자, 한민족의 혈통을 오염시키거나 범죄와 질병의 온상 등의 이미지로 재현되고 있다. 국경을 넘어 낯선 나라로 노동이주를 선택하고 실천한 다양한 국적과 인종, 연령의 이주노동자들이 자신들의 주체를 인정받지 못한 채 한국사회가 규정하는 객체, 하나의 타자로 수렴되고 있는 것을 관찰할 수 있다. 이 글에서는 외국인 이주노동자의 실질적인 모습을 한국사회에서 재현되고 있는 유형과 비교 분석함으로써, 한국 사회에서 발견되는 이주노동자의 재현 양상이 갖는 의미를 설명하고자 한다.

This paper explores the representation of foreign migrant workers in Korea. They are represented with various images such as 'industrial trainees' or 'illegal residents'; 'refugees or slaves escaping from famine'; 'source of pollution or impure being.' These stereotyped representations influence on the Korean people attitude toward foreign migrant workers in everyday life. Racial hierarchy applied on migrant workers has been constructed not only through biological racial categories but also sociocultural stereotypes based on material wealth or national power.

This paper illustrates African migrant workers life and compare it with 'stereotyped representations of migrant workers in Korea. Through this analysis, this paper analyzes how these representations of foreign migrant workers have been used in the construction of 'the other' in Korean society.

Foreign migrant workers are imagined in the process of constructing 'self image' of Korean people who has overcome economic poverty and the ruins of war within a generation. As an concluding analysis, this paper explains the way of representing foreign migrant workers in terms of making otherness in Korean society.
