일제 식민통치하의 조선 체질인류학이 남긴 학문적 과제와 서구 체질인류학사로부터의 교훈

Abstract

본고의 목적은 식민통치시기에 시작된 일제의 체질인류학이 물려준 유산이 오늘날 한국 인류학에 남긴 과제의 한 측면을 검토하는 것이다. 현재 한국 체질인류학의 뿌리는 일제시기에 조선인을 대상으로 이루어진 체질인류학 연구 활동에서 찾을 수 있다. 본고에서는 이 연구업적들의 학문내적 특성을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 이것이 후대의 학문 발전에 부과한 한계를 극복하고 향후 한국 체질인류학의 발전을 도모할 방도를 모색하고자 한다. 더불어 서구 체질인류학의 전개사를 짚어 봄으로써 한국 체질인류학의 학문적 발전을 도모함에 있어 취해야 할 방향이 무엇인지에 대한 단서를 찾고자 한다.

현대 한국 체질인류학에서 주류를 이루고 있는 해부학적 내지 형태기술적 체질인류학만으로는 이러한 학문적 작업을 하기가 어렵다. 이는 한국 체질인류학의 발달사와 관련되어 있으며 그 뿌리를 일제에 의해 시작된 한국 체질인류학에서 찾아 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구노트에서는 일제 시대에 시작된 한국 체질인류학의 학문적 성격을 검토하여 그것이 이 문제와 어떤 관련이 있는지를 밝히고 이를 기반으로 앞으로의 발전 방안을 모색해 보고자 하는 것이다.

또한 한국체질인류학의 발전 방향을 모색하기 위해서 서구체질 인류학사의 전개를 살펴 볼 필요가 있다. 서구 체질인류학 발달사에서 인간문화 연구와 인간생물학 연구가 맺어온 관계를 되짚어 봄으로써, 그들의 경험으로부터 일제가 후대의 학문에 남긴 제약을 극복할 수 있는 실마리를 찾을 수 있다고 보기 때문이다. 이러한 모색의 해답은 서구의 전다윈주의적(pre-Darwinian) 체질인류학이 어떻게 인종주의를 극복하고 진정한 진화과학으로 거듭남으로써 학문적 활로를 되찾고 인간에 대한 종합과학을 기능하게 하는 이론적 기반을 가지게 되었는지를 살펴봄으로써 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

The field of physical anthropology is not well known to both the academia and the general public in Korea. Furthermore physical anthropology in Korea has had virtually no scholarly interactions with cultural anthropology that explores cultural aspects of man. This paper examines the characteristics of physical anthropological studies on Koreans during the period of Japanese colonial rule in Korea and attempts to find a way to overcome the limitations that the physical anthropology during the Japanese rule put on the later development of physical anthropology in Korea in an effort to suggest a future path of sound development of physical anthropology in Korea. This paper draws upon the history of development of physical anthropology in Western countries for lessons to be learned for the future development of physical anthropology in Korea.

For the keys to the future development of physical anthropology in Korea may be found in understanding the way in which Western pre-Darwinian physical anthropology overcame racism to become a viable science and establish a theoretical foundation for a comprehensive science of man by successfully transforming itself into a true evolutionary science.

The conclusion of this paper is that physical anthropology in Korea started mainly as a field of anatomy, that it was pre-Darwinian in its focus on morphological descriptions and racial typologies, and that, with the prolonged interruption in academic activities following the liberation from the Japanese rule, it failed to become an evolutionary science that went beyond anatomical anthropology of the Japanese colonial period, the legacy of which consequently was the weakened academic productivity and the marked decline in social recognition of the field and its contribution to the society. The task for Korean physical anthropology to undertake in order to become a viable science is for it to be reborn as a true human evolutionary biology because morphological physical anthropology that has persisted from the Japanese colonial period to the present day does not have the potential to provide a feasible theory on the relationship between human biology man and human culture. When Korean physical anthropology becomes a true evolutionary science, it will have something to contribute to the facilitation of discussions on the relationship between human culture and human biology that are necessary to extend the academic horizon of anthropology.
