인도네시아 쁘딸랑안 여성들의 외설주문 : 언어, 몸, 그리고 욕망

Abstract

본 연구는 쁘딸랑안의 외설주문을 쁘딸랑안 여성들의 주체성과 행위성을 표현하고 구축하는 사회적 행 위의 한 양식으로 분석한다. 또한, 이러한 주술 장르의 연행과 해석에서 드러나는 몸과 욕망에 대한 여성의 관점을 설명하며, 특히 이러한 여성의 시각에서 나타나는 유동성과 다중성에 주목한다(Raheja and Gold 1994; Meyer 2000). 따라서 이 글은 쁘딸랑안 여성들의 외설주문을 분석함으로써, 쁘딸랑안 여성들이 그들의 몸과 욕망에 대한 남성중심적인 시각에 대하여 단순히 배격하고 저항하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 그들 사회의 지배적 관점을 차용하고, 패러디하며, 동시에 전복하고 있음을 보이려 한다.

보다 구체적으로, 이 논문은 우선 쁘딸랑안 여성들의 외설주문 사용과 직접적으로 관련되는 사회적 맥락으로서 쁘딸랑안 남성과 여성의 관계에 대하여 고찰하고, 특히 쁘딸랑안 사회에서 지배적인 젠더 이데올로기로 작용하는 이슬람의 남성/여성에 대응되는 이성(akal)과 욕망(nafsu)이라는 이분법적 담론을 살핀다. 둘째, 쁘딸랑안 여성들의 주문의 텍스트적 차원에서 공통적으로 발견되는 언어학적인 특질과 구조를 분석하고, 이러한 텍스트가 반영하고 있는 쁘딸랑안 사회의 몸과 성적 욕망에 대한 담론을 살펴본다. 또한 이러한 텍스트와 그 연행을 둘러싼 쁘딸랑안 여성들의 해석을 살펴보고, 이러한 해석을 통해 드러나는 여성들이 가지고 있는 몸과 욕망에 대한 다양하고 유동적인 관점을 분석한다.

마지막으로, 외설주문을 행위의 차원에서 분석하여, 어떻게 쁘딸랑안 여성들이 이러한 외설주문의 연행을 통해 쁘딸랑안 사회의 지배적인 이슬람적 담론인, 남성/여성과 이성/욕망이라는 이분법적 구분을 극복하며, 그것은 어떻게 그들의 사회적 정체성과 연결되는지를 살핀다.

This article explores the interplay among language practices, desire, and the body through a sociolinguistic analysis of Petalangan womens obscene magic spells called "Monto Cabul". "Monto Cabul" is a Petalangan womens genre that intends to increase sexual satisfaction between spouses. Petalangans believe that the performance of monto cabul can manage their bodies and sexual desires. Many women recite the spells in order to 'open desire' for their husbands' sexual satisfaction before sexual intercourse. On the other hand, women also use the spells to 'close the body' afterwards to protect their bodies. By describing and analyzing language features and patterns found in these magic spells, I show how Petalangan cultural notions of sexual desire and the body are linguistically constituted and socially embedded in their social relations.

Unlike many previous studies that have presumed "womens resistance" in womens genres, I focus on ambiguity and multivocality of womens voices found in the performance of Petalangan obscene spells.

Through an analysis of the spells in the levels of texts as w ell as their social uses, I demonstrate how Petalangan women actively appropriate and utilize their dominant social conventions to represent the female body and desire. At the same time, I also argue how Petalangann women construct and perform their subversive views of the female body against their dominant Islamic gender ideology. Ironically, Petalangan womens usage of magic spells reveals women so 'rational' as to control their desires, while the Petalagans dominant Islamic gender discourse describes the relation of men and w omen as the dichotomy between reason(akal) and 'desire'(nafsu). Therefore, the Petalangan womens genre reveals the fluid and multiple subjectivities of Petalangan women, by deploying various notions of the body and desire in diverse social relations and contexts.
