어머니역할(mothering)에 대한 심리인류학적 연구

Abstract

심리인류학 전문지 Ethos는 2010년의 스페셜 이슈 중 하나로 일상적 실천으로서 어머니역할(Mothering as Everyday Practice)을 다루면서 어머니역할이라는 주제를 새롭게 조명한 바 있다. 특히 다양한 문화적 맥락에서 벌어지는 어머니의 행위를 근접 관찰하여 분석한 사례를 제시하면서 어머니역할을 중요한 연구 영역으로 주목할 것을 제안하였다. 그러나 사실상 이 연구들이 다루고 있는 어머니의 양육 행위 및 자녀와의 상호작용 관습으로서의 어머니역할은 사회화 혹은 인간발달과 관련한 심리인류학적 연구들이 전통적으로 관심을 기울여왔던 영역이라 할 수 있다. 또한 문화와 인성 학파에서부터 제기된 인간은 어떻게 문화화된 사람으로 성장하는가라는 심리인류학의 고전적인 질문을 여전히 공유하고 있다(Barlow and Chapin 2010). 그렇다면 이 연구들의 관점은 사회화와 관련한 전통적인 연구들과 비교하여 어떠한 차이점이 있는가? 또한 어머니역할과 아동 사회화라는 주제를 이해하는 데 있어서 이들의 관점은 구체적으로 어떠한 이론적 흐름에 위치하고 있는가?

본 글은 이처럼 최근 심리인류학 내에서 어머니역할(mothering)이 재조명되는 흐름에 주목하면서, 이 연구들이 구체적으로 어떠한 이론적, 방법론적 배경 하에서 어머니역할을 재조명하고 있으며 관점과 논의의 내용은 무엇인지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 이 연구들이 이론적 배경으로 삼고 있는 여성주의, 문화적 모델과 언어사회화 연구, 정신역동과 간주관적 과정 등의 관점을 중심으로 그간 전개되어온 어머니역할과 관련한 연구들을 소개한다. 이를 통하여 어머니역할과 관련한 최근의 연구들이 사회화 혹은 인간발달이라는 주제를 탐구하는 데 어떠한 함의를 지니며 어떠한 기여를 하고 있는지 검토한다. 또한 심리인류학적 연구에서 어머니역할이 다양한 논의 지점을 내포한 영역임을 보여주고자 한다.

This review attempts to locate the renewed interests in mothering in the long tradition of anthropological studies of socialization, child-rearing, and personhood, by examining recent ethnographic studies and their theoretical and methodological positions. For this, I pay attention to feminist perspectives, person-centered approach, cultural model theory, and language socialization.

Current inquiries on mothering nicely capture the meanings of everyday interactions between mother and child, and present the dynamics of maternal behaviors. While offering close descriptions and rich interpretations of mother-child interactions, however, many of them run the risk of overlooking broader sociocultural contexts.

Some studies that look at the relationship between mothering and post-industrial capitalism are promising in this regard. This review demonstrates that the subject of mothering not only provides an important foundation for examining socialization process, but also has abundant implications about the central issues of self and person in psychological anthropology.
