Abstract

Reducing Gwendolyn Brookss poetry to a successful example of The Black Arts Movement of the late 1960s, as is done by many critics, may be too impoverishing. While acknowledging the political and personal significance of the black community, Brooks focuses on the lives of women by exploring different dimensions of home. Home as the traditional, domestic, patriarchal space functions as an obvious limitation for women and produces rebellious characters, whether successful or not, in Brookss early poems. Notably, the black community which collectively rebels against the discriminating society is also referred to as a home; this home, celebrated and cherished on the one hand, is severely criticized on the other for it retains oppressive attitudes toward women. Brookss sensitive handling of the dynamics between race and gender demonstrates her exceptional insight. Although she has explicitly claimed to be a representative black poet, Brooks is keen on underscoring the condition of women among the socially justified collectivism of we who share a home, both in literal and symbolical sense of the word. As is shown in the poets ironical affection for unconstrained women who break away from home, she creates a complex and multifaceted concept of home. Taking a step further, Brooks suggests a whole new home via examples of feminine mourning that extend beyond the boundaries of any kind. Violence that dominated in the name of safe and proper home is dissolved as home expands, imaginatively and liberally embracing the others.
