Korea has a long history of "hojuck" (household registry) system for the purpose

of military draft, tax, and labor services. During Yi Dynasty, last kingdom of Korea, "hojuck" system was quite effectively utilized and the number of households and population for the entire country were made available by this system. From its inception the Yi Dynasty carried out a compulsory household registration every three years. A copy of the registration was stored at the central government office at Hansung (Seoul) and other copies at provincial offices respectively.
