Abstract
There are quite a few suffixes III Korean which denote contrast and concession. In
this paper the three suffixes '-to,' '-telato,' and '-lcilato' are dealt with. The three suffixes above are similar in that they all denote concession. However, they are not the same. They are distinguished from one anothe ... in terms of the speaker's assessment of probability. When the suffix '-to' is used, the event described by the verb. to which the suffix is attached mayor may not occur. In other words, the condition mayor may not be fulfilled. On the other hand, when the suffix '-telato' is used, the speaker assumes that the event is not likely to occur, or he is not interested in the fulfillment of the cbndition. Compare th~ following two sentences.
(1) Ku-ka ka-to, na-nun kaci anh-keyss-ta.
'Even if he goes, I will not go.'
(2) Ku-ka ka-telato, na-nun kaci anh-keyss-ta.
'Even if he were to go, I will not go.'
In (1) it is implied that he mayor may not go. On the other hand, in (2) it is implied that it is not likely that he will go, or his going is a purely hypothetical condition. With the suffix ' -lcilato' the speaker's assessment is focused on the degree of conditions. The suffix ' -lcilato' denotes that the condition is the better (worse) or the best (worst) condition. So an element of surprise is expressed by the suffix, because some expected thing may not occur' under the better or best condition, or something may occur unexpectedly under the worse or worst condition.
