In some analyses of Korean phonology (Martin 1951, Kim 1986, Kim 1989, Yu 1989, Jun 1993, 1994) it has been hypothesized that Korean fortis/ aspirated consonants are geminates. This hypothesis, which we may call Geminate Hypothesis", seems compatible with two durational facts found in previous phonetic research on Korean fortis/aspirated consonants. First, Korean fortis/aspirated consonants are of longer duration than their lenis counterparts (Martin 1951, Kim 1965, and Kim 1986). However, this phonetic fact does not necessarily mean that the consonants are phonologicalIy geminates. Second, a vowel is shorter in length before fortis/aspirated
consonants than before lenis (Shin 1996, Oh & Johnson 1997, Oh & Lee 1997, Kim 1997).
