Abstract
This paper treats the temporality of the nominalization (such as in the derived nominal such as Besteigung, Überquerung, Untertunnelung, etc., and in the infinitive nominal such as Besteigen, Überqueren, Untertunneln, etc. The base verbs of these nominals are prefix verbs which denote the changes in the state of affairs. Intuitively they are interval based, but syntactically they do not allow the modification with the durative predicates or durative temporal adverbials. Thus they cannot cooccur with the predicates dauern, in Anspruch nehmen or the temporal adverbials den ganzen Tag, ein Monat lang, etc. On the contrary, the infinitive nominals such as Besteigen, Überqueren, Untertunneln can be modified with durative adverbials/adjectives or cooccur with the durative predicates whereas it is not always the case for the derived nominals. It is found that the infinitive nominalizations visualize the time interval which is not accessible in the case of their base verbs. The process of the events denoted by the infinitive nominals are described with the function which has the subintervals as domain and the changes of the properties of the theme arguments as range. The derived -ung-nominals, however, always denote the result of the changes of the state of affairs. If they denote the result of the changes repeatedly within a specific interval composed of subintervals, then they can be modified with temporal adverbials or cooccur with durative predicates.
