Abstract
As Australia is a multi cultural society, Korean language classes have students with diverse cultural backgrounds. This diversity often creates problems since it is very difficult to have one yardstick and apply it to such a diverse group. In particular, a conventional mode of teaching can lead to tension since background students are perceived to have some advantages over non-background students. The conventional mode of teaching also tends not to meet the different learning needs of background and non-background students.

This paper aims to explore a teaching methodology which deals with a Korean class consisting of students from various backgrounds. Group discussion on print advertisements comprised the core of the method tried this study. The use of advertisements was based on the fact that they illustrate many aspects of popular culture and provide a rich and wide range of social and cultural contexts, including both traditional and contemporary visual images.

Class observation revealed that these activities not only gave students the opportunity to develop intercultural awareness, but also stimulated their intellectual curiosity and enhanced their motivation for learning the Korean language and culture.
