WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? - The Virginia Tech Shootings and the Korean American Community

Abstract

지난 2007년 4윌 미국 버지니아 테크 대학교의 총격 사건 범인 조승희 씨가 남한에서 유학 온 외국인 학생이자 외래인이라는 담론이 형성되어， 남한파 재미 한인 사회 및 미국의 주류 사회 등을 초국적적으로 넘나들며 서로 영향을 주

고받으며 변형되기도 하면서 발전되었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이렇게 생산된 담론에 의해 주목을 받게 된 조 씨와 더불어 미주한인들파 주위의 동양계 미국 인들에 관한 일종의 사회적 시민권의 문제(예를 들어서 이틀이 미극 사회에서

잘 포함되고 수용되며 구성원 자격이 주어지는지 또한 소속감을 느끼고 있는지)가 특별한 방식으로 결정된 경위플 비판적으로 검토하였다 두 번째로는 이런 식으로 담론이 발전된 이변에는 지난 반세기 동안 남한과 북한에 대해서 열

종의 헤게모니를 행사해 온 미국의 역할이 지속되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 세 번째로는 조 씨가 더 이상 외국인이 아니며 미국에서 자라나 교육을 받은 영주 권자인 미국 산이라는 점이 밝혀져 미국 바깥의 외국인 한국 탓만 하며 내쫓을 수 없게 되자 이 담론은 새로운 성격을 띠게 되었다. 즉， 구태의연한 우생학적인 인종차별주의 담론에서 표면상R로는 세련되어 보이는 버지니아 테크 총격 사건의 문화화 내지는 민족 특성호펄 시도했다 결과적으로 필자는 인종화와 문화화의 전략이 사회 시민권의 문제와 빌접한 관계가 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 이런 특별한 양식으로 담론이 전개되었기 때문에 우리는 총기 규제라는 가장 중요한 공공정잭에 대해서 논의하고 또 행동을 취할 수 있는 중요한 기회를 잃었다.

As gunman, Seung-hui Cho was identified as a South Korean foreigner and alien by the mass media, public discourse on the Virginia Tech shootings developed and circulated throughout South Korea, the Korean American community, and in the American mainstream society.

Consequently, in this essay, I critically examine the question of social citizenship (e.g., inclusion, acceptance, membership, belonging, etc.) for Cho and other Korea/Asian Americans who found themselves at the heart of this public discourse.

Secondly, the role of U. S. hegemonic relations with North and South Korea also

comes into account. Thirdly, when Cho could not be places outside the U. S.

anymore, public discourse replaced old eugenic racial stereotyping by relying on a

new strategy: the culturalization and ethnicitation of the Virginia Tech shootings.

As a result, I would also like to contribute to the discussion on racialization and culturalization through this paper. In addition, I call our attention into the much

neglected arena of public policy in terms of gun control.
