국어수업에서 "관계의 언어" 생산에 대한 연구

Abstract

이 연구는 국어수업의 장에서 교과서나 교사의 의도를 벗어나며 국어수업의 결과로서 생산되는 학생들의 특정 언어에 주목하였다. 본 연구에서 관계의 언어라고 불리는 이 국어수업 언어는 수업 구성원들 사이의 부정적 관계 양상이 《쓰기》교과서 과제 수행의 과정에서 재현되는 양상을 지칭한다. 현재 국어교실에서 이루어지는 쓰기 과제 수행이 학생과 학생, 학생과 교사 사이의 적극적인 소통 대상이 되지 못함으로 인해 생기는 이상(異常)적인 증후이다. 관계의 언어 생산에 있어서 기반이 되는 수업 구성원들 사이의 관계를 파악하기 위해 한 특정 학생을 구성원들 간 관계의 중심에 위치시켰다. 초점화된 연구 대상인 태환이는 만 9세의 어린이로, 국민기초생활수급 대상 가정의 자녀이다. 2009년 3월부터 2010년 2월까지 1년 동안 수행한 국어교실에서의 참여관찰 결과, 태환이가 타인에 대한 증오와 자기혐오를 《쓰기》과제 수행을 통해 지속적으로 표현하고 있음을 확인하였다. 이와 같은 부정적 맥락에 있는 관계의 언어는 국어수업의 장에서 소외 또는 배제되는 태환이의 위치를 반영하고 있다. 본 연구자는 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 국어수업의 장은 학생들의 사회경제적 조건의 영향력 안에 있을 뿐만 아니라, 그것에 의해 일정 부분 결정되는 학생들 사이의 관계가 특정 학생의 국어수업 언어를 통해 표현되며, 이는 그가 속한 사회적 영역, 즉 국어수업의 속성 및 행동 규칙에 반응하여 이루어지는 구조적 생산물임을 제안하였다.

This study explores how children are influenced by the social fields in which they practice language. I focus on a case study of a nine-year-old boy, Taehwan, from a poor family that receives need-based-support from the government. I observed Taehwan from March 2009 to January 2010 in Korean language arts class: in the classroom, where he was a student in the third grade. I analyzed Taehwans language written in his textbook titled Writing. The classroom is comprised of children from families with various socioeconomic statuses, but all higher than Taehwan. In the classroom, Taehwan clearly manifested feelings of inferiority, and also hatred toward his classmates, which I called relational language. I conclude that Taehwan identifies with his social postion in the classrom in his writing. Language behavior among children is highly sensitive to the social field in which a child is acting--to the extent that a child may learn and display his social position to the other children.
