<영이록>의 성장소설적 면모와 교육적 함의 -소운성을 중심으로-

Abstract

본고는 소운성을 중심으로 하여 <영이록>의 성장소설적 면모를 읽어본 것이다. 성장의 의미와 관련하여, 잠재능력 개발이나 대외적 성공만이 성장으로서 의미가 있는 것이 아니라, 실패를 통해 어른이 되어가는 것도 인격적 성숙의 한 측면이라고 보았다. 소운성은 강한 기질과 거만한 성품이 문제가 되어 손기와 직접적으로 갈등하게 되고 실패를 경험하게 된다. 그러나 소운성의 실패는 인물의 좌절로 이어지지 않고, 실패의 수용과 겸손, 그리고 화해의 단계로 이어진다. 소운성이 자신의 실패에 좌절하지 않고 주변인들과, 세상과 화해하는 것이 가능했던 까닭은 그에게 주어진 고난이 환상과 결부된 성격의 것이기 때문이다.

<영이록>을 성장소설적 관점에서 읽어보는 것은, 교육적 측면에서 볼 때 다양한 성장 양상을 문학을 통해 접함으로써 독자가 자신의 삶을 반성하며 자아정체성을 찾아갈 수 있다는 점에서 무엇보다도 의미가 있다. 그리고 잠재능력의 발현과 실패를 통한 정신적 성숙 중 어떠한 것에 더 가치를 둘 것인지에 대한 독자 스스로의 판단을 유도하는 열린 텍스트로서도 의미가 있다. 또한 아버지의 질서에 순응해가는 소운성의 성장 결말과 관련해서는 비판적 읽기가 가능하며, 선악과 같은 이분법으로는 설명될 수 없는 소운성의 인간형을 통해 고전소설의 인물에 대한 이해의 폭도 넓힐 수 있는 교육적 의미가 있다.

<Youngirok> shows an extended description about the relationship between Sohnki & Sowoonsung from <Sohyunsungrok>. In <Sohyunsungrok>, as Sowoonsung experiences a change of character by relationship with Sohnki, a chance to grow is made. However, the relationship between these two main characters was described fragmentarily in <Sohyunsungrok>. Instead of the fragmentary scenes, <Youngirok> gives a detailed description of their relationship. In this literary work, he discovers himself by failures. Facing the hardship he can't overcome, Sowoonsung comes to accept his limits. With this realization, he doesn't get frustrated. By cooperating with people around him and living a balanced life, he himself starts to make the situation improve. If growth means not only displaying one's potential capacities or outward success, but also realizing one's inadequacy by failures, the change that Sowoonsung shows in <Youngirok> makes this work seen as a growth novel. A story about growth like this one is meaningful because it can make adolescent students, who are on the way to find themselves, think about the meaning of life.
