A Current Comparative View on East Asian Music Similarities and Differences in Traditional Music of China, Korea, and Japan in Terms of Structural and Emotional Contents

Abstract

I am delighted to have this opportunity to discuss issues related to Asian music research with all of you distinguished scholars at the third International Asian Music Conference. Today I plan to talk about the comparative analyses of traditional music among China, Korea, and Japan as a research approach to East Asian music. There are many more countries in East Asian region other than the three mentioned here and China is actually composed of dozen of small tribes. Largely because of the extent of my own knowledge, however, I will limit my discussion to the music of the three countries of China, Korea and Japan. For Chinese music, in particular, I only deal with the music of central China, or Zhongbu 中部, and the Huanan 華南 region excluding most small tribes. Although there are so many different types of music such as traditional and modem music, art and popular music, and court and folk music, I will concentrate on traditional music because that is the root of any musical

culture. Even then, I feel my knowledge is quite limited.

제3회 동양음악 국제학술회의에 국내외의 저명한 학자들이 모여 동양음악에 대하여 함께 토론할 수 있게 된 것을 대단히 기쁘게 생각한다. 나는 이 기회에 동아시아음악 연구의 한 시도로서 한국과 중국·일본의 전통음악의 비교에 대하여 생각해 보려 한다. 사실 동아시아라고 하면 한·중·일 삼국 이외에도 많은 나라들이 포함되어 있고, 특히 중국이라고 하면 오늘날 수십 개의 소수 민족을 포함한 나라이다. 그러나 이 글에서는 나의 능력의 한계로 한·중·일 삼국에 국한하여 논의하겠고, 특히 중국음악은 소수민족의 음악을 제외한 中部와 華南지방의 漢族의 음악이란 의미로 쓰고 있음을 미리 밝혀둔다. 한편 음악이라고 하면 전통음악과 현대음악， 예술음악과 대중음악, 궁정음악과 민간음악 둥 다양한 갈래가 있어 간단히 말하기 어렵지만， 여기서는 음악문화의 뿌리에 해당할 수 있는 전통(고전)음악을 중심으로 살펴보기로 하겠다. 이 역시 나의 지식의 한계를 인정할 수밖에 없다.
