In examining contemporary art musics that "cross over" different cultural traditions, it is necessary to invoke music-theoretical criteria for assessing the type and degree of musical integration that takes place. To what extent do the aesthetic values of each culture merge or converge? In what specific sense does the composer integrate musical resources drawn from distinct cultures? This paper explores such issues in two orchestral works written by Toru Takemitsu, November Steps (1967) and Autumn (1973), that feature the shakuhachi and biwa as solo instruments backed up by a Western orchestra. November Steps, considered a landmark composition in this genre, combines musical expression ranging from traditional honkyoku style of shakuhachi playing to Ligetian micropolyphony.
