Two Sides of a Similar Coin A common origin hypothesis in Honam region percussion band music/ dance

Abstract

It is commonly assumed in Korean musicology and folklore studies that geographical and economic conditions of the Honam region of South Korea (North and South Cholla provinces) have influenced corresponding musical and philosophical characteristics of this same area, both in traditional instrumental and vocal musical genres. Western plain counties, the so-called "right side/way" area (udo), are contrasted with the predominantly mountainous eastern counties, the so-called "left side/way" area (chwado).² This distinction is officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture/Office of Cultural Assets in its granting of Important Intangible Cultural Asset status to two local percussion bands (nongak/p'ungmul) of the Honam region, one from the right side or udo tradition (Iri Nongak) and one from the left or chwado (Imshil P'ilbong Nongak). From 1995-96 I lived in North Cholla province, conducting field research for my doctoral dissertation on Korean percussion band music/dance. The left/right distinction at that time was not only real in the abstract but in the flesh - most performers from the udo tradition had nothing to do with their chwado counterparts, and vice versa.

한국음악학과 민속학에서는 보통 한국 호남지역(전라남·북도)의 지리·경제적 조건이 이 지역 전통기악과 성악 장르의 음악적 및 철학적 특징에 영향을 끼쳐왔다는 설명이 흔히 받아들여지고 있다. 서쪽의 평야지대, 이른바 우도(右道)는 산악지대가 많은 동부, 곧 좌도(左道)와 대비된다. 이러한 구별은 문화부/문화재청에서 호남지방의 두 지역 농악, 곧 우도(이리농악)와 좌도(임실필봉농악)에 모두 무형문화재 지위를 부여함으로써 공식적으로 인정받고 있다. 1995년부터 96년까지 나는 전라북도에 살면서 한국농악에 대한 박사논문을 위한 현지조사를 수행하였다. 당시 좌·우도의 구별은 때로 추상적으로뿐만 아니라 피부로 느낄 만큼 실제적으로 다가왔다. 즉 우도농악 연주자 대부분은 좌도의 연주자들과 전혀 무관하였고, 좌도도 마찬가지였다.
