靈山作法 연구

Abstract

靈山作法은 불교의식 중 齋에 포함돼 있는 단일 의식이고, 齋는 영혼천도 의식이다. 영산작법은 석가모니불의 영취산 설법모임을 재현한 것인데, 대승불교의 법화사상이 그 핵심을 이룬다. 그리고 영산작법은 오늘날 佛家에서 전하는 5종의 齋의식 중 유일하게 영산재에서만 행해지는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그런데 영산작법의 이런 쓰임새는 현행에 와서 고정된 것으로 보인다. 즉 조선조 불교의식집에 의하면 영산작법이 영산재 外 다른 齋에도 사용한 흔적이 보여서, 이 의식의 사용이 오늘날처럼 영산재에만 국한되었던 것 같지는 않다. 또 영산회상의 재현인 영산작법은 내용적으로 영혼천도를 위한 齋와는 무관한 것이어서, 영산작법이 왜 천도의식에 사용되었으며, 齋에서 영산작법이 차지하는 위치와 의미는 무엇인지에 관한 조명이 필요하다. 영산작법에 관한 이런 제반 문제를 검토하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다.

Yongsan chakpop 靈山作法 is one of the ritual stages included in chae 齋, one of the Buddhist ceremonies. Chae is a ceremony especially for sending the souls to nirvana. Yðngsan chakpop tells a reenactment of the Buddhas sermon given on the Vulture Peak, particularly the sermon of pðphwa 法華, a dotrine of Mahayana Buddhism. It has been said that yðngsan chakpop is used only in yðngsanjae 靈山齋 among the five different kinds of chae. In this paper, however, I will argue that yongsan chakpðp was also used in other chaes besides yðngsanjae, which is different from the present-day usage. Also, I will provide an interpretation of my own as to why yongsan chakpop is used in the ritual to send the souls to nirvana, and what the meaning and place of yðngsan chakpðp in chae are.
