The Concept of Composition in Korean Music

Abstract

This paper will discuss the development of the concept of composition in Korean music as distinct from composition in Western art music. Several scholars have considered Korean composition within the framework of Western art music. However, lately, appreciation has grown for the fact that each society has its own unique musical culture and thus a different view of composition. This development has potential to broaden our study of ethnomusicology. Then, before getting into the main argument, we will attempt to define composition in Western art music.

이 논문에서 필자는 서양 음악에서의 작곡의 개념과 구별되고, 또 구별되어야만 하는 한국 음악에서의 작곡의 개념에 대해서 논하려고 한다. 지금까지 몇몇의 학자들은 한국 음악에서의 작곡의 개념을 서양 음악에서의 개념의 틀에 묶어 두려 했다. 하지만 근래에 각자 다른 사회는 그들 나름대로의 음악 문화가 있고, 작곡에 대한 견해도 사회마다 다를 수 있다는 사실에 대한 인식이 점점 커져가고 있다. 이러한 발전은 민족음악학 연구의 지평을 넓히는 데에도 큰 도움을 주고 있다. 먼저 본격적인 논의를 시작하기 앞서 서양음악에서의 작곡의 개념을 검토하도록 하겠다.
