<처용가>와 <만전춘> 줄나눔의 실제와 문제점

Abstract

시조 및 전후(前後) 석줄노래[三行詩]들에서 노랫말의 도막나눔[分節]이 일정 층위에서 음악과 종량적(從量的, quantitative)으로 조응(照應, correspond)하는 양상을 살피고자 졸고 삼부작 석죽노래 분절론을 시작했다. 그 첫편(김세중 2002: 120)에서, 석줄노래 아닌 <(고려)처용가>와 <만전춘(별사)>의 줄나눔[排行] 복원을 참고 삼아 별고(別稿)로 다룰 것을 약속했다(120쪽). 한글 노랫말을 얹은 <처용가>의 악보는 따로 전하지 않는다. 그러나 한글 「처용가」는 <봉황음> 일기(一機)에 얹어 부르는 노랫말임이 『악학궤범』(5.12b-13a)에서 확인되는데, 한문 노랫말을 얹은 <봉황음>의 악보가 『세종장헌대왕실록악보』(이하, 세종악보)와 『대악후보』에 실려 있다. 이에 터잡아 한글 「처용가」를 줄[行] 또는 그 이하 층위까지 한문 노랫말에 맞춰 도막나눔하는 작업을 일찍이 장사훈(1966: 102-03) · 이혜구(1967: 31-34) 님들이 해놓았다. 그러나 <봉황음>에 얹은 한문 「봉황음」은 음악과 맞아떨어지는 도막나눔이 가능한데, 「처용가」 노랫말을 같은 음악에 얹을 때는 일부 모호하거나 부자연스러운 도막나눔이 생기는 문제에 님들은 깊이 천착하지 않았다. 이 글에서는 먼저 <봉황음> 음악의 거시적 얼개와 세부 도막나눔이 한문 「봉황음」의 얼개 및 도막나눔과 맞아떨어지는 모습을 확인하고, 이를 바탕으로 한글 「처용가」를 실제 도막나눔할 때 나타나는 몇 가지 문제를 진단하고 해결의 실마리를 모색해 본다.

In the first part of my trilogy "On the Correspondence Between Textual and Musical Segmentations of Three-line Songs," I suggested to put forward another independent (but related) essay on Cheoyong ga (from Coryeo) and Manjeon chun (in Korean text). Again in these songs, which don't belong to three-line ones, the segmentations of literary text and music appear to correspond to each other on a certain level. In these two songs, what survive are only literary texts, not music itself. Through Sejong sillok akbo and Akhak gwebeom, however, one could see that these texts were sung on the same melodies as Bonghwang eum and another Manjeon chun with Han Classic texts, respectively. Lee Hye-ku and the late Chang Sa-hun already saw lots of fruitful results in matching the verses phrase to phrase to music, but there remain some odd and unnatural matchings. In this essay, I reexamine the existing matchings and propose some alternatives which seem more natural.
